The passwords you save when you sign in to a website or an app are in one of two places, depending on what you use:

- **Android and Chrome** (on PC and Mac too): in **Google Password Manager**. You open it from Chrome with **More** > **Passwords and autofill** > **Google Password Manager**, or from any browser at `passwords.google.com`.
- **iPhone and Mac**: in the **Passwords** app, available since iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. Open it, search for the website and tap (or hold the pointer over) the **Password** field.

On iPhone and Android, before showing you a password, the phone asks you to prove it's you: passcode, fingerprint or face. In Chrome on a computer you can ask for the same protection (Windows Hello or your Mac's screen lock) by turning it on in the password manager's settings.

## Before you start

- **Are you somewhere private?** A password shown on screen can be seen by anyone next to you.
- **Do you know which account you saved them with?** The passwords in Google Password Manager are tied to the **Google Account** you signed in to Chrome or your phone with. If you have more than one account, check them all. Those in Apple's Passwords app are in your **Apple Account**, if iCloud Keychain is turned on.
- **Chrome without signing in**: if you haven't signed in to Chrome, your passwords are saved only on that computer or phone.

## In Google Password Manager

### On a computer, with Chrome

1. Open **Chrome**.
2. At the top right, select **More** > **Passwords and autofill** > **Google Password Manager**.

![Diagram of Chrome on a computer: the three dots at the top right, Passwords and autofill in the menu, then Google Password Manager.](https://simplebuild.it/assets/img/tutorial/password-salvate-chrome-en.svg)

3. Under **Passwords**, select the website you want.
4. To the right of the password, select **Show password**.

Google points out that asking for your fingerprint or face is **off** by default: if you want Chrome to ask before showing a password, in the password manager's **Settings** turn on **Use Windows Hello when filling passwords** (on PC) or **Use your screen lock when filling passwords** (on Mac).

From the same page you can **edit** or **delete** a saved password.

### From any browser

Go to `passwords.google.com` and sign in with your Google Account. Google explains that from there you can manage the passwords saved in your account even without Chrome.

### On Android

1. Open **Chrome** on your phone.
2. At the top right, tap **More**, then **Settings** > **Google Password Manager**.
3. Tap the password you want to see.
4. Tap **Show password** and, if asked, unlock with your fingerprint or passcode.

### Check whether any password has been stolen

In Google Password Manager on a computer, select **Checkup** in the left column. Google tells you if any password has appeared in a **data breach** or is too easy to guess.

## In Apple's Passwords app

The **Passwords** app collects your website and app passwords, Wi-Fi passwords and verification codes. Apple introduced it with iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia: if you can't find it, update your device.

### On iPhone

1. Open the **Passwords** app (unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode).
2. Type the name of the website or app in the search field at the bottom.
3. Tap the account, then tap the **Password** field.

Or tap **All** to see the full list and sort it however you like.

### On Mac

1. Open the **Passwords** app.
2. Type the account name in the search field at the top, or click **All** in the sidebar.
3. Select the account.
4. Hold the pointer over the series of dots next to **Password**: the password appears.

### Wi-Fi passwords

In the same app, tap or click **Wi-Fi** to see your saved networks and their passwords. All the steps are in the guide on [how to find your saved Wi-Fi password](https://simplebuild.it/tutorial/trovare-password-wifi).

### Passwords not showing up on another Apple device?

You need **iCloud Keychain**. Apple gives the path: **Settings** (on Mac, **System Settings**) > your name > **iCloud** > **Passwords and Keychain**, and turn on iCloud Keychain there.

### Check for weak or stolen passwords

In the **Passwords** app, choose **Security**: Apple flags passwords that are easy to guess, those used on several accounts and those that have appeared in known data leaks.

## Good habits with saved passwords

- **Don't send passwords by text message or email.** If you need to share one with a family member, both Apple and Google have features for sharing it with your family group.
- **A different password for every website.** The password manager remembers them for you: let it suggest a strong password when you create an account.
- **Turn on two-step verification** for important accounts: the guide on [how to turn on two-step verification](https://simplebuild.it/tutorial/verifica-in-due-passaggi) explains how.
- **Be wary of anyone asking for your passwords.** No real bank, office or support service asks for them by email or phone: see [how to spot phishing emails](https://simplebuild.it/tutorial/riconoscere-email-phishing).

## If it still doesn't work

- **The password you're looking for isn't there.** Maybe you saved it with another Google Account, in another browser or only on another device. Also check the list of websites you chose never to save a password for (in Chrome: the password manager's **Settings**, under **Declined sites and apps**).
- **Chrome no longer offers to save passwords.** In Google Password Manager, open **Settings** and check that **Offer to save passwords and passkeys** is on.
- **You don't remember the password for your Google Account or Apple Account**, the one you need to see all the others: the recovery process is different and must be done from Google's or Apple's official pages.
- **You deleted a password by mistake on your Mac.** Apple explains that you have 30 days to get it back: in the **Passwords** app, click **Deleted** in the sidebar, select the account and click **Recover**.
- If you fear someone has had access to your passwords (stolen phone, strange emails sent in your name), change your email and bank passwords right away and get a technician to help you check your other accounts calmly.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can someone see my passwords if they pick up my phone?

On the phone, showing them requires your passcode, fingerprint or face. That's why your phone needs a lock and you shouldn't share the code; on the computer, turn on the Chrome protection described below.

### Can I see the passwords saved on my iPhone from a Windows PC?

Yes, with iCloud for Windows: Apple explains that you can set up iCloud Passwords to use them in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

### The browser says a password is compromised: what do I do?

It means that combination of username and password has appeared in a data breach. Change it right away on that website and everywhere you reused it.

### Can I save all my passwords to a file?

Yes: in Chrome, from the password manager's **Settings**, choose **Export Passwords** > **Download file**; Apple's Passwords app can export too. Treat that file like the bunch with all your house keys: keep it safe and delete it as soon as you no longer need it.
