Privacy policy for AsciiCam
An iPhone camera that redraws what you point it at in ASCII characters, as you move. Stills, clips up to 15 seconds and GIFs. AsciiCam is free and needs no account or network.
This is a translation of the informativa privacy in Italian; if the two differ, the Italian version prevails.
No data collected
AsciiCam does not collect any personal data: what you point the camera at, your shots and your settings never reach me or anyone else. There are no accounts: you use the app without giving your name, email or anything else.
No network connection
There is no code in the app that connects to the internet: it does not contact any server, mine or anyone else's. The conversion into characters happens on the iPhone.
No analytics, tracking or ads
AsciiCam contains no analytics or tracking tools, shows no ads and includes no third-party SDKs.
Camera
The app asks for permission to use the camera to show you the viewfinder in characters and to take shots. If you refuse, you can still convert photos from your library.
It has no use for the microphone: clips are silent, and AsciiCam never asks for it. It does not use your location or contacts either.
Photos from your library
To convert a photo you already have, you use the iOS photo picker inside the app. AsciiCam receives only the photo you pick: it cannot see the rest of your library, which is why it never asks for permission to read it.
You can also start from Photos: open a photo, tap Share and choose AsciiCam. The conversion appears right there, made on the iPhone.
Saving to Photos
When you save a still, a video or a GIF, iOS asks for permission to add items to your library. With that permission the app can only add: it does not read your photos. If you refuse, Share still works.
What stays on your device
AsciiCam keeps only the last style you chose (character set, density, color, rendering), in the app's settings. Shots and clips do not stay in the app: you find them wherever you save or send them.
Clips, GIFs and the files prepared for sharing sit in a temporary folder of the app, which is emptied at every launch. The app syncs nothing with iCloud. Uninstalling it erases everything.
Sharing
A shot, a clip or the text leaves the app only when you decide: by saving it to Photos, with Share or by copying the text. You choose where it goes, and from there the privacy policy of the app or service you chose applies.
What it declares to Apple
In its privacy manifest, the file where an app tells Apple what it uses, AsciiCam states that it collects no data and does no tracking. It lists one system feature, the app's settings (UserDefaults), where it keeps the style you chose. That never leaves the device.
App Store and Apple
Downloads and updates go through the App Store, run by Apple under its own privacy policy. The device analytics that iOS may send to Apple depend on your settings (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements), not on the app.
