AsciiCam

Live video, drawn in letters

An iPhone camera that redraws what you point it at in ASCII characters, as you move. Take a still or record up to 15 seconds, and turn the clip into a GIF.

Coming soon to the App Store

Open AsciiCam and the viewfinder is already made of characters: move the phone and the letters follow. Above the shutter, a strip shows your shot in each of the ten looks. Terminal 80 is phosphor green on black. Newsprint looks like a photo printed in a newspaper, and Braille packs eight dots into every character.

After a still you can change the character set, the density (40 to 220 columns), the color and the brightness without shooting again; the framing stays as the viewfinder showed it. In Video mode the shutter records up to 15 seconds, without sound, and you save the clip to Photos as a video or as a looping GIF.

The result is also text, to copy into a message or save as a .txt file, or a PNG up to 2,600 pixels on the long side. Photos from your library convert inside the app, or from Photos with Share, without opening it. Free, with no account. The app contains no network code.
