Privacy policy for Pre-Capture
A dashcam for iPhone that also records the seconds before you hit REC, in 2-minute files with date, plate and GPS burned in. No account, no network.
This is a translation of the informativa privacy in Italian; if the two differ, the Italian version prevails.
No data collected
Pre-Capture does not collect any personal data: video, audio, location and settings never reach me or anyone else. There are no accounts and no sign-up: you use the app without giving your name, email or anything else.
No network connection
There is no code in the app that connects to the internet: it does not contact any server, mine or anyone else's. Videos are not uploaded anywhere.
No analytics, tracking or ads
Pre-Capture contains no analytics or tracking tools, shows no ads and includes no third-party SDKs.
Camera and pre-roll
The app asks for permission to use the camera to record. While it is open on screen the camera stays on even before you tap REC, and iOS shows its indicator: this is the pre-roll, the last seconds of video (45 to start with, from 15 to 120) kept only in memory and constantly overwritten.
Those seconds end up in a file only when you start recording. If the app goes to the background they are discarded, and the camera and location stop.
Microphone
If audio is on (it is to start with; you turn it off in the app under Settings › Recording › Audio), iOS asks for permission to use the microphone and ambient sound is recorded with the video. If you refuse, the app records video only. During a phone call the microphone stays with the call and the app carries on with video only.
Location
With your permission, granted while using the app, Pre-Capture reads your location only to print the GPS coordinates on the video. It does not save it anywhere else, does not send it and does not read it when the app is closed or in the background. If you refuse, the video comes out without coordinates.
The burned-in coordinates are part of the picture: anyone who receives one of your videos can see where you went. The same goes for the vehicle name and the plate, if you entered them in the settings.
What stays on your device
Videos are saved only on your device, in the app's library, in a space shared between the app and its extensions: the quick-start control and recording from the Lock Screen. What you record with your iPhone locked stays in the extension's folder until you unlock and open the app, which moves it into the library.
The settings (vehicle name and plate to burn in, pre-roll and segment length, audio, quality, appearance) are kept in the app's settings. The app syncs nothing with iCloud; like other app data, videos and settings may be included in your device backup, if you have turned it on.
You delete a video in the Library: open it and tap the trash can, or tap Edit to pick more than one. Everything is erased when you uninstall the app.
Photos and sharing
A video leaves the app only when you decide. If you save it to Photos, iOS asks for permission to add items to your library: the app does not read your photos. You can also send it with the iOS share sheet. You choose where it goes, and from there the privacy policy of the app or service you chose applies.
What it declares to Apple
In its privacy manifest, the file where an app tells Apple what it uses, Pre-Capture states that it collects no data and does no tracking, and lists three system features: the app's settings (UserDefaults), shared only between the app and its extensions; file dates, to show you when a video was recorded; free storage, to warn you when it runs low and not start a recording that would have nowhere to go. None of this leaves the device.
Recording other people
A dashcam films the road: other people, other vehicles and their plates may appear in your videos. How you keep, use and share the footage is up to you, and it is your responsibility to do so within the rules of the place where you are, including those on data protection. This is information, not legal advice.
App Store and Apple
Downloads and updates go through the App Store, run by Apple under its own privacy policy. The device analytics that iOS may send to Apple depend on your settings (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements), not on the app.
